About Plymouth Hoe

Plymouth Hoe, is a large south facing open public space in the English coastal city of Plymouth. It offers superb views across Plymouth Sound, Drake's Island, and across the Hamoaze to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall.
With its large grassy areas and seating, Plymouth Hoe is a great place for a leisurely day out and a picnic, taking in the views that Sir Francis Drake looked upon when he famously finished his game of bowls before heading out to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588. There is a statue of Drake just a few metres from the green.
Along the eastern end of the hoe you'll find The Royal Citadel, a truly impressive 17th century fortress which for over a 100 years was England's main defence against an attack from the sea. With its incredible 70ft high walls, it was initialy built in 1665 against the threat of a Dutch invasion, and is still home to British troops today.
Another important structure along the Hoe, is the iconic Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, which was originally built on the Eddystone Rocks some 14 miles away, but once the rocks it was built on started to be undermined by the sea, the whole lighthouse was moved, stone by stone and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe in 1877, where it stands proudly today and is one of the south-west's most well-known landmarks.
If you visit the Hoe during the summer months, you may want to take your swimming suit so that you can enjoy a dip in the fantastic Tinside Lido, a wonderful Art Deco lido opened in 1935. The pool was closed down in 1992 but after a successful campaign by locals it was renovated, given a Grade II listed status, and reopened in 2005.
